1925 – 2012

Marie Petersen, the daughter of Frank and Emma (Weiss) Vogel, was born October 25, 1925 at Churdan, Iowa and departed this life March 4, 2012 at the Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City, Iowa. She lived her life to the age of 86 years, 4 months and 9 days.
Marie attended and graduated from the Churdan High School in 1943. On November 22, 1943, Marie Vogel was united in marriage to Velmer Petersen at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Churdan. To this union were born seven children. After their marriage, the couple farmed south of Farnhamville and raised their family. In 1971, the family moved to a home in Farnhamville. Marie worked as a Nurse’s Aide at the Greene County Medical Center for more than 20 years. When Velmer became a resident of the Gowrie Care Center, Marie moved to an apartment in Gowrie to be near her husband. Velmer passed away in September of 2004 and Marie continued to make her home in Gowrie.
Marie was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lohrville and a member of the Rosary Society and C. D. of A.
Marie is survived by her seven children and their spouses; James (Nancy) Petersen of Pembroke Pines, Florida, Katherine (Howard Cozzi) of Keswick, Virginia, Robert (Marjorie) Petersen of Brewer, Maine, Patricia (Donald Walters) of Story City, Cynthia (Alan Carstens) of Gowrie, Thomas (Bobbi) Petersen of Reno, Nevada and Teresa (Patrick Barnes) of Norwalk, 21 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, a brother Gene (Louise) Vogel of Churdan, and a sister, Marcella (Ron McLellan) of Carroll. Those who preceded her in death were her parents, husband of 61 years, and two brothers, Edward and Robert Vogel.
Mass of the Christian burial was held Friday at 10:30 AM, March 9, 2012 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lohrville with Marie’s grandson, Father Phillip M. Cozzi officiating and assisted by Parish Priest Father Lynn Bruch. Burial was made in the Reading Cemetery near Farnhamville. Musical selections, “How Great Thou Art”, “The Old Rugged Cross”, “On Eagle’s Wings” and “The Lord’s Prayer” were rendered by Benjamin and Elisabeth Petersen and accompanied by organist, Richard Carey. Visitation was from 4:00 to 7:00 PM with a Catholic Daughter of America Rosary prayed at 5:00 PM and a Vigil for the Deceased at 6:30 PM Thursday evening at the Church.
Casket bearers were Marie’s grandsons, Tony Walters, Curtis Carstens, Andy Walters, Ben Petersen, Matt Carstens, Josh Barnes and Jason Barnes.
