Vincent Monahan

Vincent “Vince” Monahan, the son of John and Katie (Collins) Monahan, was born April 16, 1922 in Churdan, Iowa and departed this life February 20, 2017 at the Greene County Long Term Care Facility in Jefferson,, Iowa. He lived a full life to the age of 94 years, 10 months and 4 days.
Vince attended country school in the Churdan area through the 8th grade and then went to work for the Fitzpatrick Brothers farming. On October 9, 1942, Vince enlisted in the Navy and served on the Lawrence Taylor ship. While in the Navy, Vince boxed and in later years trained guys in his home basement in Jefferson for the Golden Gloves boxing. He received an honorable discharge from the Navy in November of 1945.
On April 23, 1946, Vincent was united in marriage to Dorothy Baynes in Jefferson. Five children were born to this union. After their marriage, they went to South Carolina where Vince worked on the Savannah River Project, an atom bomb plant. After returning to Jefferson, Vince and his father-in-law Harold Baynes established and operated for several years the Baynes & Monahan Plumbing & Heating. He then worked as plumbing supervisor for Shriver Construction in Jefferson and later for L.A. Fulton & Sons in Des Moines. Vince and Dorothy were divorced in 1975 and in mid 1990, Vince moved back to Churdan. After his “quote” first retirement, he started helping his son-in-law, Royce Schulz with his plumbing & heating business well into Vince’s late 80s..
Vincent was a member of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Churdan. Vince was an avid gardener with a large garden next to his house in Churdan and another in the country. He was known for his salsa and sauerkraut. He liked to play cards with all his friends and take fishing trips with his sons and grandsons. He had a trailer at Spirit Lake where he would take his grandkids. Most of all, his children and grandchildren were of great pride to him. Vince left Churdan in 2014 and moved to The Gardens Assisted Living Apartments in Jefferson and then moved to Long Term in 2016.
Vince is survived by four children; Shelley (Royce) Schulz of Scranton, Maria (Jim) Anderson of Ankeny, Sean Monahan of Carroll and Colin (Sonya) Monahan of Bayard, 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a sister, Jane Brown of Fort Dodge. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Vinny Joseph Monahan, five brothers; Morris, Martin, Joe, Leo and Louis, sisters; Agnes Franey, Mary Ilene Vanderpool, Martha Louise Block and Johanna Monahan who died at birth and a son-in-law, Richard Mahoney.
Mass of the Christian burial was held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, February 25, 2017, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Churdan with Father Jeff Schleisman officiating. Musical selections were sung by the church choir with Greg Carey as cantor and Lois Last as organist. Burial was made in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will Saturday at 9:00 am at the church.
Serving as casket bearers were Aaron Schulz, Jake Schulz, Nick Schulz, Ryan Mahoney, Chase Monahan, and Tage Monahan. Honorary bearers were Dean Coobs, Troy Vogl, Clint Webber, Casey Cook, LeRoy Sherlock and Tom Thorpe.
