Mary Rose Nelsen, the daughter of Henry and Amalia (Kopsa) Kalous, was born May 4, 1932 at Lake City Iowa and passed from this life March 7, 2021 at Shady Oaks Care Center in Lake City, Iowa at the age of 88 years, 10 months, and 3 days.

Mary graduated from Lohrville High School in 1950 and started her career as a nursing assistant at Greene County Medical Center, Jefferson Iowa.

On December 18, 1954, Mary was united in marriage to James Christian Nelsen in Tennessee while James was serving his country in the military. Five children were born to this union. The couple made their home in Lohrville and raised their family. Mary spent her life doing what she loved, working as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital in Lake City, Iowa. Mary retired in 2004 after 40 years of devoting her life to the care of others.

In the 1980s, a co-worker invited Mary to a clowning class in Fort Dodge and she really enjoyed it. She started attending local events dressed up as a clown, making balloon animals, and painting faces for the kids.

In 2012, Mary moved to Shady Oaks Care Center in Lake City where she lived until her death. Her husband, Jim, passed away in February of 2013.

Mary is survived by her children: Mary Genice (Cletus Althoff) Easton of Waukon, Mike Nelsen of Lohrville, Chris (Deb) Nelsen of West Des Moines, Patty (Brad) Lundquist of Johnston, Carl (Lori) Nelsen of Lohrville, 15 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and sister, Elizabeth Thomasson of Massachusetts. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband James and brother, Carl Kalous.

           Funeral Services were held  Saturday, March 13, 2021 at the United Methodist Church, Lohrville with Pastor Lorinda Hoover officiating with burial in the Evergreen Township Cemetery near Lohrville. A musical selection of “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” was played at the service.

Serving as casket bearers were Ben Nelsen, Dustin Nelsen, Cole Collis, Tyler Nelsen, Austin Nelsen, Skylar Loper, Kyler Nelsen and Koby Kraft.
